Durable vs. Medical Power of Attorney (And Why You Need Both!)

A basic component of estate and emergency planning involves powers of attorney, which allow someone else to act as your representative for special matters. But there are many different form types and ways to use them, and the culmination of it all can make relatively simple documents feel confusing — leaving some nearly guessing as to what type of legal form they need.

Even though both types remain valid if a person should become incapacitated. The main difference is a durable power of attorney allows an agent to handle financial activities on the principal’s behalf, and a medical power of attorney is solely for health care decisions.
